Horse Care: Autumnal Maintenance

With the weather cooling down, it's the perfect time to ensure your horse is in peak condition for the colder months ahead. Here at Equiworld, we believe that a horse's well-being is of paramount importance, so here are a few tips for Autumnal maintenance:

  • Winter Coat: A horse’s winter coat takes time to grow in. It can start as early as August and may not be fully in place until well into autumn. If you are looking to keep your horse’s coat looking tip-top, try using a good quality shampoo and conditioner for its first proper wash in autumn. Also, look at feeding a diet that includes added flax seeds, oils or oats to improve the shine and fullness of its coat.
  • Worming: Regular worming is vital for the health and well-being of your horse. Remember to follow the vet’s recommendations, but usually, autumn is the right time to start using a heavier duty wormer for the changing seasons.
  • Flies and Parasites: Although the worst of the flies may be gone, make sure you are treating your horse against the lingering flies and mites, especially if it’s kept in stable accommodation or prone to itching and nibbling on its coat.
  • Rugs: As the temperature drops, your horse may require a rug, especially during colder nights. A good quality, well-fitting rug is essential. Regularly check its condition and make sure it’s providing adequate protection.
  • Feet: Your horse's hooves will benefit from some additional attention in autumn, so be sure to check regularly for cracks or other damage. If necessary, see a qualified farrier for shoeing or trimming.
  • Teeth: Make sure you book an annual checkup for your horse’s teeth. This is crucial to prevent issues later.
