A Royal Birthday & International Dressage

It was a big week for equestrianism in Britain. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 72nd birthday on Tuesday, receiving no doubt, a number of delightful equestrian themed gifts, after a weekend at Sandringham which surely included a horse riding jaunt or two.

Across the English Channel, dressage aficionados were abuzz with the first ever World Dressage Masters event in Bordeaux, France. This newly established series has set out to revolutionise dressage with its focus on high-class performances and innovative competition format. With star riders such as Isabell Werth, Anky van Grunsven and the charismatic Nicole Uphoff competing for a share of the £100,000 prize fund, Bordeaux certainly saw some exceptional showmanship and breathtaking routines. Isabell Werth was victorious with her mount Gigolo, delivering a phenomenal display, securing first place on both the Freestyle and Grand Prix days, much to the delight of her enthusiastic fans.

Irish Olympic Hopes Shine in Aachen

Across the water, Ireland’s Olympic hopes in dressage were given a significant boost in the World Cup qualifying event in Aachen, Germany. The team of Joseph Murphy, Lisa White, and Carl Hester secured a remarkable third place, setting the stage for a strong contender in the upcoming 1994 World Championships in The Hague. It was a performance that solidified their status as a serious force in the international dressage arena.
