Showjumping: Europe & America

Europe is gearing up for another season of showjumping, and already the competition is heating up. Last weekend, in Geneva, Switzerland, Germany's Markus Beerbaum continued his dominance of the Grand Prix circuit, taking home top prize in the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Geneva.

Across the Atlantic in America, the American Equestrian Association is announcing its new calendar for the 1994 season. With several prestigious Grand Prix events on the calendar, the AAEQ has announced the introduction of the American Championship Series, designed to provide American riders with more international exposure and competition opportunities. The first stop will be the Florida Grand Prix at Palm Beach in March, and the final event will be the AAEQ National Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in August.

Dressage: German Dominance in Frankfurt

German riders continued their winning ways at the Frankfurt Dressage Festival over the weekend, winning both the Grand Prix and the Freestyle classes. Isabel Werth on her Olympic gold medal-winning horse, "Gigolo," was again unbeatable, demonstrating remarkable precision and artistry.

With several other high-profile German riders competing, such as Isabell Freese and Matthias Alexander Rath, the level of competition was exceptionally high. Germany is clearly the country to beat in dressage for the upcoming year, with several strong contenders vying for Olympic selection for the Atlanta Games in 1996.

Eventing: Focus on Badminton

As the eventing season approaches, attention is turning towards the iconic Badminton Horse Trials. Held in the United Kingdom every May, this prestigious event is a major highlight of the equestrian calendar. With a top prize purse and the ultimate test of horse and rider partnership, the event draws riders from across the globe.

One notable entrant this year will be Caroline Powell from New Zealand. Powell is the reigning World Champion in eventing and will be a serious contender at Badminton. This year will also see a strong contingent of British riders, led by Olympic champion Mark Todd, aiming to take home the Badminton title.

Racing: Australian Horses Make their Mark

Over the weekend in Melbourne, Australia, the iconic Caulfield Cup saw a sensational victory from "Subzero," an 8 year-old gelding. This victory solidified his position as a major player in Australian racing, adding to his already impressive wins, which include the Australian Cup in 1993.

Across the world in the United States, a new wave of American Thoroughbreds is emerging, challenging the European dominance in racing. One notable horse to watch in this emerging group is "Holy Bull," who recently won the prestigious G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in impressive fashion. His connections have high hopes for him as a potential future Triple Crown contender.

Breeding: New Sire on the Scene

With the breeding season in full swing, new sires are being carefully selected by breeders all around the world. One of the latest stars to enter the stallion scene is "Invincible Spirit," an Irish-bred horse. Standing at the prestigious Coolmore Stud, he has proven popular with breeders in recent years, with the progeny performing well both on the track and in the show ring.

His first foal crop is now racing, and they have proven successful already, particularly on the flat racing scene. It will be fascinating to watch this young sire and see the success of his offspring develop in the years to come.
