Equiworld News #30128: Monday 1st April 2002

Welcome to Equiworld News, your weekly digest of all things equestrian, bringing you news from the stables and show rings across the globe. Today, we're bringing you reports from the world of showjumping, dressage, and eventing, with a focus on the big competitions happening this week and the news from our Scottish stables.

From the Highlands to the World:

We start close to home, here in the rolling hills of the Aberdeenshire countryside. Hayfield Equestrian Centre, home of Equiworld, is bustling with activity. The weather's turning a corner after a harsh winter, and horses and riders alike are keen to make the most of the sunshine. This week, our very own champion, Mhairi Campbell, will be competing in the North East Scottish Showjumping Championships, held at the picturesque Ballater Riding Centre. We wish Mhairi the best of luck, and will keep you updated on her progress.

International Spotlight:

Moving away from the Highlands, the equestrian world is buzzing with anticipation for some major competitions this week.

  • The World Cup Jumping in Stuttgart, Germany, is set to bring together some of the world's best show jumpers, battling for crucial points in the prestigious competition. We'll be keeping a close eye on the performance of British rider John Whitaker and his magnificent steed, Argento.
  • In Verden, Germany, the World Cup Dressage kicks off with the first leg of the 2002 season. Germany is a powerhouse in dressage, so we can expect fierce competition, and our eyes will be on the current European Champion, Anky van Grunsven and Salinero, to see if they can hold onto their crown.
  • Over in Lexington, Kentucky, the United States Eventing Team is preparing for the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, the first leg of the prestigious CCI competition**. This is a huge event for the team, and we wish them all the best in their quest to bring home the coveted title.

The Spirit of the Horse:

In less formal competition news, a recent study conducted by the International Society for Equitation Science sheds light on the intricate relationship between humans and horses. The study highlights the powerful emotional connection horses have to their riders, revealing how they can mirror their rider's emotions and even respond to their internal state, even in the absence of direct communication.

Around the Equiworld:

We've also received some fascinating snippets from our global equestrian network:

  • From Australia, the Royal Melbourne Show is making waves with its equestrian events. It's not just the high-stakes showjumping that's attracting attention. The "Giddy-up" program, showcasing the unique breeds of Australian horses and their roles in the country's history and culture, is captivating audiences of all ages.
  • Argentina, famous for its gaucho culture and breathtaking landscape, has announced a major investment in developing equestrian tourism. This initiative promises to bring together equestrian enthusiasts from around the world to experience the unique blend of natural beauty and horseback riding in the South American country.
  • The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has launched a new campaign, "Safe Sport: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity," focused on raising awareness about the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment in equestrian sport. The campaign, which will include training sessions and educational materials, addresses critical topics such as ethical behavior, fair play, and safeguarding the well-being of all participants, including horses.
