Welcome to Equiworld News #25877, bringing you the latest equestrian happenings from around the globe. As always, we're based at our headquarters in Hayfield, near Aberdeen, and ready to gallop through the most exciting news in the world of horses.
Showjumping:
World Cup Final at 's-Hertogenbosch: The countdown to the FEI World Cup Jumping Final at 's-Hertogenbosch is officially on! The competition will be held in the Brabanthallen from 2nd to 4th February, and excitement is reaching fever pitch. The prestigious event has attracted a star-studded line-up, including legends like Marcus Ehning, Ludger Beerbaum, and Eric Lamaze, all eager to claim the coveted title. As we eagerly anticipate the action, it's worth noting that Great Britain’s Geoff Billington won the final event of the 2001 FEI World Cup Western European League held at Bordeaux just yesterday. Could this be a sign of things to come for Team GB in 's-Hertogenbosch? We'll have to wait and see!
CSI-W Valkenswaard: Earlier this week, the CSI-W Valkenswaard event wrapped up. John Whitaker had a fantastic showing, clinching victory in the Grand Prix with his magnificent horse, Argento. A strong showing from Whitaker will certainly boost morale ahead of the upcoming World Cup Final. The Belgian, Eric Lamaze, won the two-star event at Valkenswaard, a fantastic result, especially as the Canadians will be heading to 's-Hertogenbosch with a full team! It's all to play for in the Dutch arena!
Dressage:
Olympia's Magic: This past weekend, the Olympia London International Horse Show was ablaze with equine brilliance, as dressage stars graced the arena. The highlight was, undoubtedly, the Freestyle competition, where Isabell Werth, aboard the mighty Gigolo, once again proved her dominance. It was a performance filled with technical perfection and artistic flair, leaving the audience spellbound. With a stunning score of 82.4%, Werth captured the hearts of everyone, showing why she is considered the queen of dressage.
The French Connection: France was also well-represented in London, with French riders Jean-Pierre Blanc and Ludovic Henry proving to be worthy adversaries in the freestyle. Their stunning performances proved that the French are a force to be reckoned with in the world of dressage. The passion for dressage is alive and well in both nations!
Eventing:
Australia on a Roll: The Australian eventing team continues its triumphant streak! In the CIC* event held in Australia this week, Australian riders dominated the podium. Andrew Hoy, known for his unwavering talent, led the pack aboard Mr. Cruise Control. Following him in close pursuit were Shane Rose and his steed, Allspice, as well as Christopher Burton and the mighty Yandoo Oaks. What a phenomenal showing from our Aussie friends!
Burghley's Calling: Burghley, the iconic four-star event held in England, is still a few months away, but preparations are in full swing. The horse inspection is scheduled for 2nd August 2001. Riders will be scrutinizing their horses and training regiments as they vie for a chance to compete at one of the most challenging and prestigious events in the world. Let’s hope for a truly exciting season filled with thrilling moments!
Racing:
The Power of the Turf: In the heart of Melbourne, racing fans were on the edge of their seats as the iconic Melbourne Cup took place earlier this month. It was an unforgettable race, with the winning horse, a majestic thoroughbred named 'Ethereal,' galloping to victory. With a performance worthy of true champions, the horse won a monumental 10-race winning streak – a testament to its extraordinary athleticism and the masterful skill of its jockey.
A New Era in Flat Racing: As the Flat season in the UK kicks into high gear, new horses are emerging as contenders, vying for dominance. Exciting talents such as Fantastic Fox and Majestic King are making their mark, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying year. We will be sure to keep you updated on the latest race results as they happen.
Breeding:
From Showring to Foal: The equestrian world was buzzing with excitement last month with the arrival of a new champion. In the US, world champion showjumper Eric Lamaze's legendary horse Hickstead gave birth to a filly. It is exciting times ahead as we watch this new arrival take her first steps! Lamaze shared the news via Instagram, with photos of his champion mare alongside the beautiful newborn, both nestled warmly under a blanket of love. As we celebrate this momentous occasion, it marks not only the birth of a new life, but a tribute to the incredible legacy of Hickstead, the stallion who will forever be remembered as a legend in showjumping history.
The Future is Bright: Breeding continues to be at the heart of the equestrian world. As more horses are born, the future of equestrian sport is secure, with promising newcomers coming of age, ready to challenge the status quo. With a dedicated network of breeders and passionate enthusiasts, we’re looking forward to a brighter future filled with breathtaking feats, both in the arena and beyond.
A Spotlight on Polo:
High Goals for 2001: Polo fever is spreading throughout the globe, with more players and fans flocking to witness the thrills of this ancient sport. From Argentina's breathtaking polo fields to the international stages of the UK, we're witnessing a revival of polo in 2001. It’s a sport that attracts a passionate audience, with matches often attended by a vibrant mix of royals, socialites, and equestrian aficionados alike.
Focus on Asia: While the European polo season heats up, it’s a different story in Asia. The Far East, particularly in Singapore and Malaysia, has seen a huge growth in polo over the past decade, becoming an important part of the equestrian landscape.
