Showjumping

Europe:

  • The Netherlands: The annual Dutch Masters competition kicked off this week at the Brabanthallen in s'-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. The event, renowned for attracting top riders from across Europe, has seen impressive results so far. In the first Grand Prix qualifier, Olympic Gold Medallist, Jeroen Dubbeldam, rode to victory with his powerful gelding, "Sunrise". His clear round in the jump-off sealed the win for the Dutch rider, keeping him firmly in contention for the coveted top spot.
  • Germany: In Hamburg, the CSI4* German Classics have been in full swing. On Wednesday, reigning European Champion, Marcus Ehning, shone on "For Pleasure", securing victory in the 1.50m class. This victory showcases his form and experience, placing him as a serious contender for the upcoming World Cup Finals in Las Vegas.
  • Great Britain: Over in the UK, preparations for the upcoming season are well underway. At Hickstead, one of the most historic venues in the UK, the famous All England Jumping Course has recently been the subject of renovations. The upgrades, including new surfaces and improvements to the infrastructure, are intended to enhance the competition experience for both horses and riders, while continuing to uphold the renowned high standards of the venue.

North America:

  • USA: With the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, Florida, now underway, the competition scene is heating up in the US. The week's first major event saw Olympian, Laura Kraut, dominate on "True Love", capturing the top spot in the CSI4* Grand Prix. The Californian rider continues to excel in the international circuit, establishing herself as a key figure in the American showjumping scene.
  • Canada: North of the border, the Toronto International Horse Show (TIHS) has concluded for 2001, leaving behind a flurry of excitement. This year's TIHS saw a number of notable successes for Canadian riders, including a win in the $30,000 Grand Prix for seasoned rider, Tiffany Foster. The strong performance from Canadian riders in this competition signals the growth and potential of the equestrian scene in the country.

Looking Ahead:

As the equestrian season unfolds, the calendar is brimming with exciting events to look forward to. Notably, the 2001 World Cup Finals are scheduled to take place in Las Vegas in April, bringing together the best riders and horses from across the world. The highly anticipated event will see fierce competition for the coveted championship title.

Dressage

Europe:

  • Germany: Germany's prominence in dressage is undeniable. The German Dressage Derby in Hamburg concluded on Wednesday with impressive performances from a range of talented riders. The win went to a young up-and-coming rider, Jessica Von Bredow-Werndl, and her elegant mare, "Unee." The young rider showcased impressive talent and control, propelling her to the top of the podium and adding to the already impressive record of German riders in the international arena.
  • Netherlands: Dutch riders continue to excel, too. The Dressage Masters in Amsterdam has commenced with a focus on the emerging riders who are eager to make their mark. A notable performance by talented Dutchman, Hans Peter Minderhoud, with his magnificent "Johnson", was a highlight of the week. While the top tier remains strong, the appearance of new faces promises excitement and a new wave of talent in the upcoming season.

North America:

  • USA: The US Dressage Finals, a pinnacle event for the sport, was recently held at the Kentucky Horse Park. With its culmination this past week, the competition witnessed exciting performances and a new champion emerging. This year, a familiar face, Debbie McDonald, took home the championship title, a fitting testament to her dedication and talent. The Finals consistently attract a diverse field of riders and horses, further showcasing the depth and growth of the sport in the United States.

Looking Ahead:

While the immediate focus may be on upcoming events like the CDI-W competition in Germany in February, the anticipation for the World Equestrian Games in Spain, set for September, continues to build. These Games, held every four years, are an unparalleled spectacle of athleticism and artistry, and will feature a number of equestrian disciplines including dressage.

Racing

Great Britain:

  • The National Hunt: This is a pivotal season in the UK with Cheltenham Festival looming large on the calendar. Last weekend's January Festival at Cheltenham saw impressive displays of equine speed and agility. The Grade 2 Festival Hurdle proved a particular highlight, as Nicky Henderson's "The French Furor" stepped up in class to secure a triumphant win.
  • The Flat: While National Hunt dominates the winter, there's plenty happening on the flat racing circuit as well. Newmarket, the hub of British horse racing, will soon be hosting the Craven Stakes, one of the first important races on the Flat calendar. The Craven Stakes, scheduled for early April, often marks the beginning of the racing season for some of the best three-year-old thoroughbreds.

Australia:

  • Melbourne: The Australian racing scene has experienced a major shake-up this week, with the Victorian Racing Club's announcement that their premier race, the Melbourne Cup, will see a substantial prize increase. This increase aims to attract international attention and create even more competition amongst the racing world. This decision signifies the ongoing growth and ambition within the Australian racing industry.

Looking Ahead:

In the months ahead, all eyes will be on Cheltenham for the Grand National, a legendary steeplechase race with history and excitement ingrained in its core. It will be a pinnacle event in the racing calendar, as thousands of spectators anticipate the thrill of a nail-biting finish.
