Showjumping

European Championships Reach a Thrilling Climax in Arnhem

The European Showjumping Championships in Arnhem, Netherlands, drew to a close this weekend with some thrilling competition. The Dutch contingent shone on home soil, claiming both individual and team gold medals.

  • Dutch Duo Dominate: Jeroen Dubbeldam, riding the impressive stallion "Jenson", took individual gold, claiming a narrow victory over fellow Dutch rider Albert Zoer. This marks the Netherlands' first individual gold since 1991, and a clear testament to the rising strength of their showjumping team.
  • Team Gold: Dubbeldam, alongside Albert Zoer, Albert Voorn, and Peter Geerink, led the Dutch team to an impressive team gold. They dominated the competition, edging out France, who secured silver.
  • British Hopes Dented: Despite a strong showing in the earlier rounds, the British team fell short of the podium, ultimately securing fourth place. However, they have much to be proud of, as the future of British showjumping looks bright, with several young riders demonstrating impressive potential.

The Power of Partnership: An Interview with Jeroen Dubbeldam

Equiworld caught up with the newly crowned European champion, Jeroen Dubbeldam, for a chat about his success:

Equiworld: Jeroen, congratulations on your stunning victory. What was it like to secure this individual gold on home soil?

Dubbeldam: "Thank you! It’s a feeling I can hardly describe. Competing in Arnhem was incredible. The atmosphere was fantastic, with so much support from the Dutch crowd. But winning on this stage, with my horse "Jenson" – who’s become such a close partner to me – makes this all the more special. "Jenson" was on top form, he really put his heart into it today."

Equiworld: You have an undeniable bond with your horse. How do you think this partnership contributes to your success?

Dubbeldam: "There’s no doubt that a strong bond between rider and horse is crucial. When you trust each other completely, when there’s an unspoken communication, that’s when you can truly perform. "Jenson" is more than a horse to me. He's my friend, my confidante. He gives me everything on the course, and I aim to always give him my best."

Equiworld: What's next for you and "Jenson"?

Dubbeldam: "We'll take some time to celebrate this victory, and then we’ll be focused on the upcoming World Cup season. The dream is always to be at the top, to continuously improve, and we'll continue to work hard towards that goal."

Dressage

Olympic Hopes Ride High at the CDIO Aachen

The CDI5* at Aachen was a vital proving ground for many of the world's top dressage riders as they prepare for the Olympic Games in Sydney later this year.

  • Isabell Werth Shines Again: German superstar Isabell Werth solidified her position as a leading contender for Olympic gold with another dazzling performance. Riding her incredible gelding "Satchmo," she secured the Grand Prix win and the Grand Prix Freestyle title.
  • Dutch Strong Contenders: The Dutch riders are proving to be formidable opponents with a strong contingent of seasoned professionals. Edward Gal, Anky van Grunsven, and Imke Schellekens-Bartels all placed high in the Grand Prix, making them key players to watch in Sydney.
  • British Team Faces Challenge: The British dressage team, led by Carl Hester and Laura Bechtolsheimer, struggled to secure consistent results. This poses a significant challenge for the team’s qualification hopes for the Olympic Games.

Eventing

European Championship Showdown in Pau

The European Eventing Championships in Pau, France, brought the continent's top eventing talents together for a high-stakes showdown. The three phases, cross-country, dressage, and showjumping, tested the endurance and skill of horse and rider combinations.

  • Germany Captures Gold: The German team, featuring experienced riders like Ingrid Klimke and Andreas Dibowski, triumphed in the team event. This win consolidates Germany’s position as a dominating force in international eventing.
  • British Medals: Britain managed to secure two individual medals in the event, with William Fox-Pitt claiming silver and Pippa Funnell taking bronze. However, the British team, aiming for a gold medal repeat from the 1999 European Championships, had to settle for silver behind the Germans.
  • Close Competition: The overall competition was intense, with several riders competing for podium places. With multiple top competitors battling for every fraction of a point, the drama played out throughout each phase of the championship.

Racing

Frankie Dettori Dominates at Glorious Goodwood

The Goodwood Festival, known for its iconic setting and thrilling racing, once again lived up to its reputation, attracting thousands of horse racing enthusiasts. Italian legend Frankie Dettori was the star of the show, securing a staggering four winners across the five-day festival.

  • Dettori's Magic Touch: Dettori continued his phenomenal winning streak, steering home winners like “Fantastic”, “Kandidate", and "Blue Indian", proving his masterful ability to bring the best out of horses. The crowds roared as he rode to victory, once again reminding the racing world why he’s a legend in the saddle.
  • Derby Trial for Irish Stars: The prestigious "Derby Trial", a precursor to the iconic Epsom Derby, saw an Irish sweep, with "Indian Ink" finishing ahead of "Elixir". The result underlines the strength and talent emerging from the Irish horse racing scene.
  • Breeders’ Cup Talk: The Festival provided a glimpse of horses to watch out for at the Breeders' Cup, the world's richest thoroughbred horse race. The exciting "Grand Journey" delivered an impressive win, demonstrating her potential for the lucrative event in November.

Behind the Scenes with Frankie Dettori

Equiworld spoke to Frankie Dettori, who, despite his numerous triumphs, still shows a genuine passion and humility:

Equiworld: Frankie, another incredible performance at Goodwood! What's it like to win so many races on this historic track?

Dettori: "It’s truly special to be riding at Goodwood, it’s an iconic track that everyone dreams of winning at. To have four winners here is something I'm very proud of, and a testament to the hard work of everyone in my team."

Equiworld: You mentioned team effort, what’s it like working with the horses and trainers here?

Dettori: “Racing isn’t a solo sport. It’s a partnership. From the owners who put their faith in us to the trainers who carefully prepare each horse – we’re all a part of a team. I’m lucky to have such fantastic horses under my care and to work with trainers like John Gosden and Richard Hannon, who understand horses and push me to deliver my best.”

Equiworld: The Breeders’ Cup is approaching, any early thoughts about your potential mounts?

Dettori: "I’ll definitely be looking at some of the horses I’ve ridden this summer to see if they're contenders for the Breeders' Cup. There’s nothing more exciting than aiming for that ultimate stage in world racing. Fingers crossed I get a chance to race for that title again this year!"
