Show Jumping
Jeroen Dubbeldam Crowned European Champion
The European Show Jumping Championships in Arnhem, Netherlands, concluded with a thrilling climax as Dutch rider Jeroen Dubbeldam took home the gold medal with his formidable steed, "Jenson van't Meulenhof". The final round witnessed a fierce battle for the top spot, with Germany's Ludger Beerbaum finishing in second place on "Goldfever" and Great Britain’s John Whitaker narrowly securing the bronze on "Mill Pearl". This is Dubbeldam’s first major championship title, a testament to the dedication and skill he and "Jenson van't Meulenhof" have cultivated.
US Show Jumpers Struggle in Arnhem
Despite the strong performance by their European counterparts, the American team struggled to secure a place in the final competition. This disappointing showing can be attributed to a combination of factors, including some uncharacteristic errors in the jumping phases.
“It was a tough week for us,” admitted team captain Mark Bellissimo. "We were certainly not at our best. The course was very technical, and the pressure got to some of the riders. We’re looking to rebuild the team for the next championships and are optimistic about the future."
Dressage
Anky van Grunsven Makes History in Aachen
The CHIO Aachen dressage competition saw legendary Dutch rider Anky van Grunsven etch her name even further into equestrian history books. Riding the magnificent "Salinero", van Grunsven secured her fourth consecutive win in the prestigious competition, achieving a truly remarkable feat in the equestrian world.
The final score, a record-breaking 86.4%, once again showcased the unparalleled synergy between rider and horse. “Salinero is simply an extraordinary horse,” commented van Grunsven. "He's my partner in every sense of the word. This victory feels sweeter with every year as it acknowledges our commitment and dedication.”
British Hopes Dashed in Aachen
While the Dutch reigned supreme, British hopes for a podium finish in the Aachen dressage were unfortunately dashed. Team Great Britain finished fifth overall, with Charlotte Dujardin and her mount "Valegro" achieving the best individual placement in sixth place. Despite a valiant effort, the riders acknowledge that the pressure of the competition was too much to overcome, with minor errors contributing to the final result.

Horse Care
Study Sheds Light on Equine Asthma
A new research study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine has unveiled crucial insights into the complex condition of equine asthma. The research team, based at the University of Cambridge, explored the genetic predisposition towards developing the condition, highlighting specific genes linked to a higher susceptibility. This study promises to contribute significantly towards early detection and the development of effective treatments for this prevalent equine condition.
A Groundbreaking Study in Horse Feed
Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have conducted a comprehensive study investigating the long-term impact of dietary fibre on equine gut health and immunity. The study, published in the journal Animal Feed Science and Technology, demonstrated that horses fed a diet rich in soluble fiber experience a notable increase in beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to improved digestion, nutrient absorption, and a stronger immune system. This groundbreaking research opens new doors for optimising horse feed, paving the way for healthier and happier equines.
Breeding
New Foal Testing Initiative Aims to Enhance Bloodlines
The prestigious Kentucky Equine Research Centre has announced a new foal testing initiative designed to revolutionise breeding practices within the equine community. The program offers thorough genetic testing of newborn foals, aiming to identify and promote desirable traits and pinpoint potential health risks at an early stage.
This initiative seeks to ensure the long-term health and performance of future generations, solidifying the foundation of sustainable breeding for both racing and recreational disciplines.
Equine Welfare Remains a Top Priority
Alongside the thrilling successes in the competitive arenas, the ongoing commitment to ensuring equine welfare is evident throughout the equestrian community. Initiatives like the "Right Horse Initiative", which promotes responsible horse ownership through extensive education programs, continues to garner significant support across various sectors.
Organizations like the Brooke and World Horse Welfare actively campaign for improved conditions in areas where horse welfare is compromised, raising awareness and advocating for impactful changes through legislation and support programs.
