Sydney Olympic Equestrian Selections – the final few spots are filled

As the Australian equestrian team finalised their selections for Sydney 2000 this week, some unexpected and disappointing news emerged. Lisa Hartigan has announced she will miss the Sydney Olympics due to injury, much to the sadness of her fans and fellow competitors. Lisa has been one of the top show jumpers in Australia for many years and a consistent team player at major championships. This announcement followed a tough week of selections which had some close calls for certain riders. However the announcement also gives an opportunity to others, and the news has led to some excited whispers, notably that the extremely talented young showjumper Rowan Willis, and the impressive Mary Willis, both could be called into the squad for a very last-minute chance at Olympic glory.

New Equine Study published by UK University - “Could horse welfare be a factor in horse racing injuries?

This academic study from Stirling University, is raising some interesting questions for the horse racing industry, Professor Sarah Scott, one of the lead researchers states “ While we have yet to find a direct link, there appears to be a strong correlation between poor horse welfare and higher instances of racehorse injuries.” This study has also suggested some more specific reasons for these injuries - that a change in “tack used could impact horse welfare and be a factor in more injuries.” These findings will certainly prompt an immediate debate amongst the various horse welfare groups, veterinary experts and the horse racing community in particular, about the significance and value of this study, but also how to ensure optimal equine welfare going forwards, especially with this research pointing to horse welfare being a possible contributory factor for horse injuries.
