The Grand Prix Fever: A European Championship Preview

As June draws to a close, equestrian eyes are firmly focused on the European Championships, set to kick off in Arnhem, Netherlands on 28 June. The continent's finest riders will be vying for top honours across dressage, show jumping and eventing disciplines, and the excitement is palpable! We'll be keeping you updated with results and reports throughout the Championships, and in this week's issue we take a closer look at some of the riders to watch:

Dressage: With defending champion Anky van Grunsven returning for her title defence, the Dutch squad will be hard to beat. However, German star Isabell Werth is a force to be reckoned with, while rising star Edward Gal, also of the Netherlands, has shown himself capable of challenging the top riders. And who can forget Carl Hester, a legend of British dressage, who will be seeking to capture gold for Team GB?

Show Jumping: France, boasting world champions Eric Lamaze and Michel Robert, will be favourites, but German champion Marco Kutscher, along with his incredible mount, “Cornet Obolensky”, will be formidable competition. John Whitaker, a seasoned veteran, leads a talented British squad hoping to secure a podium spot. We'll be watching for exciting new combinations in the Grand Prix arena, as emerging riders seek to establish themselves on the international stage.

Eventing: Germany will be hard to dethrone as reigning champions, with seasoned riders like Hinrich Romeike and Andreas Dibowski ready to deliver consistent performances. The British team, bolstered by the experienced Pippa Funnell and rising star William Fox-Pitt, are hoping to capture a medal in this thrilling and demanding discipline.

Jumping for Joy: The Royal Ascot

As always, Royal Ascot brings a splash of equestrian elegance to the social calendar. This year, however, there is an additional thrill in the air - The Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations are adding extra sparkle to the prestigious event. With five days of flat racing showcasing the best thoroughbreds in the world, the focus is firmly on the thoroughbreds and their talented riders.

For many, Ascot is a social event – a showcase of fine fashion and extravagant hats, where champagne flows and royalty observes from the Royal Box. But at the heart of it all lies the pure excitement of seeing champion horses battling it out on the world famous course. Be sure to watch the Queen Anne Stakes on the opening day - this is one of the most competitive and eagerly awaited events.

Across the Globe:

  • Australian Show Jumping Championship: Rowan Willis secured his second Australian Championship title in emphatic style, demonstrating impressive jumping abilities that put him miles ahead of his rivals.
  • USA Endurance Ride: In Tennessee, endurance riders tested their horses' stamina and resilience in a gruelling 100-mile race. Emily Cook, a well-known name in the US Endurance world, claimed the overall victory in the endurance competition.
