Equiworld News #22700 – 20th March 2000

Welcome to Equiworld News #22700, reporting on the world of equestrian sport from our headquarters at Hayfield near Aberdeen.

From the Show Jumping Arena

The weekend saw the conclusion of the CSI5* Jumping Amsterdam where Eric Lamaze, riding Hickstead, secured victory in the prestigious Grand Prix. A delighted Lamaze described the win as "the highlight of my season so far." He pipped Olympic Champion Jeroen Dubbeldam and the impressive De Sjiem into second place, whilst Marcus Ehning, on the consistent For Pleasure, took the final podium spot.

Meanwhile, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada the Royal Winter Fair is well underway, with some exciting competition expected throughout the week. Tiffany Foster continued her winning form, guiding her new mount, Victor, to a top spot in the $30,000 CSI-AM Classic, beating out 26 other competitors. Jonathon Millar finished second, again demonstrating the rising star status of this young rider.

Over in Europe, the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour, held at the Spanish coastal resort of Villamartin, is entering its final stages. Roger-Yves Bost, on Lusca (a mare by Mr Blue), is leading the pack with an impressive tally of victories throughout the series. The exciting final round is expected to be a tight battle, with Eric Lamaze and Hickstead pushing for a late charge on the podium.

The Dressage Scene

The world's elite dressage riders will converge in Arnhem, Netherlands, later this week, for the inaugural event of the 2000 FEI World Cup Dressage Finals. This prestigious event will see the world's top eight riders battle it out for the coveted title.

Anky van Grunsven from the Netherlands is the hot favourite, riding Salinero. Her remarkable performances over the past year have made her an unstoppable force in the world of dressage.

A strong German challenge is expected from Isabell Werth and Gigolo, both having consistently scored high throughout the qualifying rounds. British rider Carl Hester is a real outside contender, though his main goal is to reach the top 8 finish.

From the Eventing Arena

The Ocala Horse Trials in Florida are underway, marking the start of the American eventing season. The highlight will be the CCI* division, which includes top American rider **Karen O’Connor on Ballynoe Castle RM - their combination had an exceptional year last year, culminating in victory at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event.

Looking Ahead to the Olympic Games

The year 2000 marks a momentous occasion in the world of equestrianism as the Sydney Olympic Games approach. Many riders are honing their skills and are aiming to peak at the Games in just a few months' time.

The Olympic Show Jumping event will see a change in the format, with the introduction of a new ‘jumping finale’ which is expected to create a more dramatic climax to the competition.

The Eventing competition will feature the new 'Jumping Final’ concept introduced in 1996.

And in the Dressage, the team competition will become a test of endurance as the horses will face the challenging ‘Grand Prix Special’ test - making for a true test of both rider and horse.

A Reminder about the Equine Flu Outbreak

In recent weeks there have been outbreaks of Equine Influenza reported in North America and Europe. The FEI, together with national authorities, have implemented strict measures to combat the spread of this potentially devastating disease.

All participants in FEI events are urged to check with the FEI website and their respective national federations for the latest updates and information regarding prevention measures and quarantine restrictions.
