European Championships: Dressage & Show Jumping

The 1999 European Dressage Championships have reached their final day in Arnhem, The Netherlands. After a fierce competition over the past few days, it's a battle for the top spot between two German riders, Anky van Grunsven and Isabell Werth.

Van Grunsven, who topped the individual Grand Prix earlier this week, has put in a breathtaking freestyle performance on her stallion, Bonfire. The judges were mesmerised by the intricate movements and the obvious partnership between horse and rider. But Werth, the defending champion, isn't giving up easily. She has ridden her powerful mare, Gigolo, to an equally impressive score, setting up a thrilling climax to the championship. It’s looking like a tight finish between these two legends of the sport.

In the show jumping competition, Germany is also on the verge of securing a dominating victory in the team competition. Marcus Ehning, Lars Nieberg, and Ludger Beerbaum are showcasing exceptional skill and horsemanship. But France is hot on their heels, determined to give the German squad a run for their money. The individual competition will start tomorrow, with some of the world’s finest riders aiming to secure the European crown.
