Equiworld News #000448: Valentine's Day 1994 – Love, Horses and a Whole Lotta History

Welcome back, dear readers, to Equiworld News! We’re galloping into this Monday, the 14th of February 1994, with hearts full of Valentine's Day cheer and minds buzzing with all things equestrian. We’re here to bring you the latest from the world of horses, and as always, we’re kicking things off from our humble headquarters in Hayfield, near the beautiful city of Aberdeen.

Scotland’s Sporting Spirit: A Royal Affair

The Scottish countryside is abuzz with anticipation for this weekend's Highland Gathering, taking place in the village of Glenfinnan, famed for its iconic train station from the Harry Potter films. This historic event celebrates the rich traditions of Scottish culture, with competitions ranging from piping and drumming to Highland dancing. But amongst the kilts and kilties, there’s one activity that truly captures the hearts of those who come from far and wide – the Highland Games, where feats of strength, speed, and skill take centre stage.

Naturally, horses have a starring role in the proceedings. The Highland Games are a test of endurance and teamwork, where the horses pull heavy ploughs, transport heavy logs, and engage in spirited chariot races. A truly breathtaking sight to behold. If you're looking for a taste of Scotland's vibrant culture, be sure to head to Glenfinnan this weekend for an experience that's truly unforgettable.

Across the Channel: French Elegance and British Dominance

It’s a tale of two nations in the world of show jumping, with the French staging the legendary Grand Prix d'Aix-en-Provence. But in a resounding victory for the British team, the ever-talented Nick Skelton has won the event riding his stellar mare, Dollar Girl. Nick, who has risen through the ranks of show jumping with incredible grace and talent, continues to be a beacon of British dominance in this discipline.

Adding to the celebrations in Aix-en-Provence was the triumphant return of the great Eric Lamaze on the scene. Lamaze, the legendary Canadian rider who had a remarkable comeback in recent years, is looking strong and powerful as he begins a new chapter with his new horse, Fine Lady.

Looking Back in Time: Celebrating a Legend

Our journey today takes us back to the golden era of equestrianism, celebrating the life of the late great, Margaret Cabell Self. Margaret, an influential figure in the world of dressage and a pivotal member of the American Dressage Association, sadly passed away this week.

Margaret's dedication and unwavering passion were instrumental in shaping American dressage into the phenomenal force it is today. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of riders, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the art of dressage, both at home and across the world. She truly embodied the spirit of equestrianism, and her memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who had the honour of knowing her.
