Dutch star Anky van Grunsven, astride the magnificent Bonfire, stormed to victory in the Grand Prix, scoring a remarkable 77.44%. She also dominated the freestyle, achieving a record-breaking score of 83.52%.
"It's truly a dream come true," said Anky, after her winning ride. "Bonfire is in peak form, and this warm weather allows him to flourish. I am looking forward to seeing how the other competitors challenge us in the coming weeks."
Germany's Isabell Werth, another legend in the equestrian world, wasn't far behind Anky. Her impressive ride on Gigolo impressed the judges, earning her second place in both the Grand Prix and freestyle.
Show Jumping: Ireland Strikes Gold in Dublin
Over at the RDS Arena in Dublin, Ireland hosted a thrilling show jumping Grand Prix. The home nation triumphed with Conor Swail, piloting the aptly-named "Living the Dream" to a clean round and victory in a thrilling jump-off against Dutch star, Eric Lamaze.
“It’s an incredible feeling to win here, especially in front of a home crowd,” said Conor. "Living the Dream is a truly amazing horse, and we have a great partnership. This victory is a fantastic start to the season."
This win continues the impressive run of Irish show jumpers on the international stage.
Eventing: The New Zealanders Make Their Mark in Australia
Across the globe in Australia, the New Zealand contingent at the Melbourne Three-Day Event was on fire. They claimed a dominant 1-2 finish, with Andrew Nicholson and his faithful mount, Jiva, taking top honours. Their fellow Kiwi, Caroline Powell, riding On the Ball, came in a close second.
“This is such an incredible achievement," said Andrew, who was the eventual victor. “Jiva has been amazing throughout the competition. It’s a testament to our hard work and dedication.”
The Australian equestrian scene was abuzz with excitement about the strength of the New Zealand team, foreshadowing a potential clash at the upcoming World Equestrian Games in The Hague.
Racing: Frankel Remains Unbeaten
Back in Britain, the legend of Frankel continued to grow. He powered to an effortless victory in the Queen's Plate at Epsom Downs, confirming his status as one of the most dominant thoroughbreds in history. The four-year-old colt, trained by Henry Cecil, stretched his unbeaten record to ten races, sending the crowd wild with his breathtaking speed.
"He truly is a once-in-a-generation horse,” said Henry, after the race. "He shows no signs of slowing down, and we are incredibly excited for what he can achieve this year."
