Top Stories:
- Europe
Britain: It's been a week of mixed fortunes for British showjumpers, with a win and a near-miss in prestigious European events. In the German Masters, Tim Stockdale piloted his bay gelding, Big Ben, to victory in the prestigious Grand Prix, claiming the top spot with a clear round in the jump-off. However, the much-anticipated performance of John Whitaker and his champion horse Milton at the Belgian Grand Prix ended in disappointment when a single fence down in the jump-off cost them the win. The pair remain in contention for the prestigious World Cup, however, with several qualifying events still to come.
Ireland: Irish horse racing enthusiasts were in mourning this week after the sudden passing of the legendary racehorse, Nijinsky. Owned by the Aga Khan, Nijinsky dominated the racing scene in the late 1960s, winning both the Epsom Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the same year - a feat that has yet to be repeated. He went on to become a successful stallion, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the breeding of thoroughbreds today.
Germany: Germany’s equestrian community is buzzing after the announcement that Olympic champion, Ludger Beerbaum, will be heading to the prestigious Aachen World Equestrian Festival later this year. Beerbaum, known for his exceptional riding and unparalleled partnership with his horse, Ratina Z, will be hoping to repeat his previous success at the competition, which includes two gold medals in the individual show jumping events.
- North America
United States: The winter season is well underway in the United States, with numerous competitions taking place across the country. Notably, the US Dressage Finals at the Kentucky Horse Park saw a record turnout of riders and spectators, showcasing the growing popularity of this elegant discipline. A special mention to Olympic hopeful, Leslie Reid, who led the way with a stunning performance on her elegant bay mare, Lady Gaga.
Canada: In Canada, preparations for the Pan American Games are in full swing, with equestrian riders from across the country vying for selection to the national team. We wish them the best of luck in their quest to secure a place at this important competition.
- Australasia
Australia: The sun is blazing across the vast plains of Australia, and with it, the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show is in full swing. Showjumping, dressage, and horse-related events have been drawing large crowds to this iconic event, offering an opportunity to experience the best of equestrian sport in the Southern Hemisphere. The excitement is palpable, as Australia prepares for its role as the host nation of the upcoming Sydney Olympic Games.
