Across the Pond

In the United States, excitement is mounting for the Kentucky Derby, a mere five months away. This year’s hopefuls are training hard, with Holy Bull emerging as a strong contender following his impressive win at the Florida Derby. Over at the American Quarter Horse Association World Championships in Amarillo, Texas, “Peppers Poco Dash” dominated the Open Reining competition, claiming his third World Championship title.

On European Shores

Over in Europe, the international show jumping season is in full swing. The Dutch Masters show in Den Bosch hosted some of the world’s top riders, with the talented Ludger Beerbaum proving unbeatable on the day. Over in the UK, Nick Skelton triumphed at the prestigious Royal Windsor Horse Show, riding his own gelding, Music.

The Asian Scene

In Japan, the World Cup Show Jumping continued with riders from around Asia and beyond showcasing their talent. Japanese riders are showing increasing strength on the international stage, and Kenichi Okano demonstrated his impressive skills in the saddle, finishing among the top five.

Australian Adventure

Down Under, preparations are underway for the upcoming Sydney Royal Easter Show, one of Australia’s biggest agricultural and equestrian events. The Australian Equine Championships are also drawing close, with a plethora of events attracting a diverse group of participants. David Toovey continues to dominate the Australian Dressage scene, having won a recent championship, setting him up for a successful Easter Show campaign.

Spotlight On: The International Society for Equine Pathology

The International Society for Equine Pathology (ISEP) held their annual meeting this past weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana. The ISEP, a dedicated organisation focusing on equine disease and diagnostics, provides valuable information and expertise for the global equine community. This year’s meeting featured lectures and workshops covering a variety of subjects including:

  • Equine Infectious Diseases: Discussing current and emerging diseases and the most effective diagnostic and treatment strategies.
  • Equine Sports Medicine: Focusing on specific issues related to athletic horses, from performance-limiting conditions to recovery protocols.
  • Equine Welfare: Highlighting new advancements in equine welfare practices and discussing current ethical challenges in the horse industry.

    A Look Back: 1974: The Year of the ‘Big Red’

Exactly 20 years ago this week, the legendary Red Rum triumphed in his second consecutive Grand National. This iconic chestnut horse, a beloved fixture on the racing scene, secured his place in British sporting history. Red Rum's unwavering spirit, alongside the skill of his jockey Tommy Stack, captured the nation's attention and the Grand National will never be quite the same without him.

The team here at Equiworld is gearing up for the Aberdeen Highland Games. This annual event is a fantastic showcase of Scottish culture and tradition, with strong competitions in the highland dancing, piping, and of course, heavy events. The highlight, of course, is always the tug-of-war event – a test of sheer strength and grit. We’ll be sharing a report from the Games, so watch this space!
