The 1994 show jumping season is well underway, and excitement is building for the prestigious Hickstead Derby. As the prestigious event looms, some of Britain's top show jumpers have been hitting the circuit hard, vying for a coveted spot in the legendary derby.
Last weekend, the National Indoor Championships at the Birmingham NEC played host to a host of impressive displays. 19 year-old show jumper John Whitaker put on a dazzling show, claiming victory with the mare, Milton. His younger brother, Michael, wasn't to be outdone, snatching the runner-up position on his trusty mount, Calypso.
Hickstead veteran, Geoff Billington, also demonstrated his form, winning the Grand Prix at the Olympia London International Horse Show earlier in the season. These strong performances give us a glimpse into what could be an epic battle for supremacy at Hickstead this year.
Dressage Domination in Germany

Riding to a flawless score of 78.8%, the formidable German pair of Isabell Werth and her phenomenal chestnut gelding, Gigolo, once again took the top spot. Their dominance in the discipline is unmatched, with Gigolo’s stunning athleticism and Werth's exceptional artistry making them a truly remarkable pair. The young British rider, Richard Davison, came a respectable fifth, marking his potential for future success.
The competition saw another notable performance from Swedish rider, Louise Nathhorst. She and her grey mare, Silvana, narrowly edged out Anky van Grunsven from the Netherlands for the runner-up spot. Both Nathhorst and van Grunsven have emerged as leading contenders for the upcoming World Championships.
