The season kicked off in earnest last weekend, with the Liverpool International Horse Show showcasing some top-class showjumping. In the Grand Prix, it was Ireland's Dermot Lennon who took the honours with the grey mare Slaney View, leaving John Whitaker with Milton, the home favourite, in second place.

"It's a great way to start the year," Lennon said after the victory. "Slaney View has been jumping well and she's feeling in great form. We've got our sights set on a good season."

The British riders had a strong showing throughout the event, with Geoff Billington taking the Derby championship, and Robert Smith, with his young mount Amboise, taking second in the Grand Prix.

The focus now shifts to Alnwick Castle, which is hosting a prestigious showjumping event this weekend. Keep an eye out for our preview later in the week!

International Dressage:

Over in Germany, Isabell Werth continued her dominant run, winning the Grand Prix at the Munich CDI, her fourth victory in a row. Riding Gigolo, the pair showcased breathtaking precision and harmonious movement, earning scores exceeding 75%. This performance serves as a strong reminder that Werth is currently on a roll and looking forward to an exciting year.

"I'm delighted with Gigolo's performance today," said Werth, following her latest win. "He's in great form and I'm really excited about the season ahead. It's important to build on this momentum and continue our development."

Another important date on the dressage calendar is approaching fast - the World Cup Dressage Final in the Netherlands next month. Expect high competition between top riders vying for this coveted title.

Racing:

On the flat racing scene, news is emerging about the upcoming Dubai World Cup at the end of March.

British trainer Saeed bin Suroor has entered a strong contingent, with several promising horses lined up to compete for the biggest prize in racing. This year, the Dubai World Cup is expected to see a thrilling showdown, with high stakes and even higher hopes for the participating riders and their mounts.

Eventing:

The Eventing World Championship in Australia has just been concluded with resounding success for the home team.

Phillip Dutton, riding Connaught, emerged as the champion in a nail-biting finish. The Australian team showed tremendous resilience and skill throughout the challenging course, securing the gold medal.

"It was an amazing experience," said Dutton, following the victory. "This team worked so hard, and everyone gave it their all. This is a real team effort, and everyone deserves their part of the glory."

The win marks an impressive achievement for the Australians, setting a benchmark for the upcoming events this season.

Equine Health and Welfare:

The issue of equine welfare is a constant concern in the equestrian world. The recent news about the discovery of a new strain of horse influenza in Spain has been met with apprehension. While it’s crucial not to panic, staying vigilant about preventative measures like vaccinations and strict biosecurity protocols is essential for maintaining the health of our equine partners.

Equiworld News will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available. We encourage everyone to stay informed and take the necessary steps to protect their horses.

Equiworld also acknowledges the recent efforts by **the British Horse Society (BHS) in promoting better understanding of horse behaviour. This organisation has developed a valuable educational program aimed at equipping riders with essential knowledge about equine psychology, communication, and safe handling. Such initiatives contribute to ensuring the well-being of horses in all aspects of their interactions with humans.
