Welcome to Equiworld News, your weekly digest of all things equestrian, bringing you news from across the globe, straight from our base here in Hayfield, near Aberdeen. This week, we’re celebrating issue number 199, and we’re diving headfirst into the world of showjumping, dressage, and racing, with updates on top riders and exciting events on the horizon.
Jumping to New Heights:
The international show jumping scene is buzzing this week. Our attention is drawn to the Grand Prix CSI 5* in Zurich, Switzerland. It was a day for the Dutch, as Eric Lamaze and Hickstead stormed to victory, leaving the Swiss crowd in awe with their performance. This win cemented their position as a force to be reckoned with on the international circuit. It was a tense battle for the podium, with Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum on Classic Touch finishing second and Switzerland's Beat Mandli taking third with Arge, proving that Swiss grit isn’t just about the chocolate.
Further afield in Verona, Italy, the CSIO 3* Grand Prix showcased an intense battle between the Italian riders and the visiting teams. Lorenzo de Luca, a rider known for his captivating style and fearless jumps, rode Chequen, the Argentinian bred horse, to a fantastic victory. It was a triumphant performance for the Italian team and gave their young riders a significant boost in confidence.
A Dance of Elegance in Dressage:
Over in the world of dressage, eyes are on Anky van Grunsven, a legendary Dutch rider whose name is synonymous with dressage excellence. This week, she and her trusty partner, Bonfire, triumphed at the Indoor Horse Show in Dortmund, adding another win to their impressive resume. Anky, now considered a master of the art, showcased flawless technique, elegant movements, and that uncanny connection with her horse.
And speaking of elegant performances, Isabell Werth and Gigolo proved once again why they’re the reigning champions. They achieved another well-deserved victory in the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal, demonstrating their impressive stamina and impeccable control. We'll be keeping a close eye on these two throughout the season as they fight for the coveted title of Dressage World Champion.
Racing Around the World:
Across the globe, horses are hitting the racetrack, their hooves pounding the ground, the thunder of their strides filling the air.
Australia is a land where horse racing is a national pastime. This week, A Time To Rock took centre stage at the Flemington racecourse, sprinting to victory in the prestigious Macedon Lodge Stakes. His blistering speed and determination, combined with the expert guidance of his jockey, proved him a true contender for upcoming races.
In South Africa, the Hollywoodbets Durban July, a major race for the year, is approaching, bringing with it an atmosphere of excitement. Trainers are carefully prepping their horses, and jockeys are polishing their skills, ready to go head to head in what promises to be a breathtaking competition.
The Equine World in Focus:
Beyond the high-stakes races and competitive shows, the equine world is brimming with captivating stories.
- A group of volunteers in India are making strides in animal welfare. Aishwarya Sagar, a dedicated animal rights activist, is working tirelessly to raise awareness and support for horses. Through her organisation, she helps rescue abandoned horses and finds them loving homes.
- In Scotland, Cairngorm Mountain Rescue has welcomed a new four-legged member: Rikki, a magnificent Border Collie. This intelligent and highly-trained dog is a crucial addition to their rescue team, assisting in locating missing people and offering emotional support during challenging situations.
- Equine therapists across the UK are finding increased demand for their expertise. More horse owners are looking to alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage, and Reiki to improve their horses' well-being and promote optimal performance.
