Welcome to Equiworld News #000147, brought to you from our headquarters in Hayfield, near Aberdeen, Scotland!

It's a crisp, fresh Saturday morning here, perfect for a bracing ride. With the recent snowfall in many parts of the world, we're sure you've had plenty of opportunity to get out there and enjoy the winter wonderland. We'll be keeping you updated on all the equestrian happenings from around the globe this week, starting with…

Show Jumping:

Ireland: At the RDS Dublin Horse Show, a fierce battle for the championship unfolded yesterday. Young Irish talent, Conor Swail, took the honours on the mighty Coco Loco, beating the seasoned Eddie Macken on Baron, who placed second. A packed stadium watched on in awe as the duo produced a masterclass in clear rounds and precision jumping, a real showcase of talent and partnership.

Germany: The CSI2* Mannheim was an exciting one this week. Dutch rider, Gerco Schroder, rode the phenomenal Lordship, securing the Grand Prix win with a faultless final round, sending the home crowd into raptures. The young German rider Philipp Weishaupt proved his mettle, coming in second on Larimar, showing that the future of show jumping in Germany is in good hands.

Endurance:

Morocco: The Marrakech International Endurance Ride, held over a demanding 160km course, drew a significant international contingent. French rider, Philippe Vienne, showcased exceptional stamina and tactical prowess on Jamel, proving himself the victor of the day. Several riders from around the globe encountered issues during the challenging conditions, highlighting the immense challenges this discipline presents.

Racing:

USA: Artax, the 3-year-old son of Alydar, blazed across the track in stunning fashion at the Florida Derby. With Jerry Bailey skillfully steering the bay gelding, Artax made light of the demanding 1 1/8 mile course, edging out the crowd favourite Soul Of A Poet by a neck. It's a race that will surely cement Artax as a formidable contender for the Triple Crown later in the year.

Australia: Mightiest, owned and trained by Frank Williams, ran a magnificent race at the prestigious Caulfield Cup. Despite having to battle the notoriously challenging Melbourne weather, Mightiest delivered a dazzling performance, showcasing exceptional grit and resilience to win the race, adding another victory to his already impressive list.

Dressage:

Germany: The Nurnberger Burgpokal finals, a showcase for the best young dressage horses in Germany, were held in the spectacular surroundings of Nurnberg's old city. Nadine Capellmann on the promising young mare, Lilly, shone through the intense competition, earning the coveted title with impressive precision and elegance.

Great Britain: At the Olympia Horse Show, British legend, Carl Hester, thrilled the crowd with his signature elegance on Biggin Hill, securing the win in the freestyle test. Hester's exceptional technical ability and the gelding's exceptional athleticism impressed the judges and spectators alike. This is a fantastic start to the season for both horse and rider, and we are sure to see more impressive results throughout the year.

Eventing:

New Zealand: The highly anticipated Burrowtown International Three Day Event, with its diverse and challenging course, presented a demanding test for riders and horses. Jock Paget, riding the reliable Clifton Promise, navigated the cross country with flair and confidence, holding his lead from the dressage to take home the overall championship. The event was a true test of skill and stamina, showcasing the remarkable bond between horse and rider, a testament to the excellence of this versatile discipline.

And now for a glimpse at what’s happening beyond the competition circuit:

From the Stables:

Equiworld was lucky enough to sit down with John Harris, world-renowned farrier and advocate for barefoot horses, to discuss the benefits of this natural approach. He highlighted how the recent research has demonstrated the many advantages of allowing horses to roam freely, without the restriction of shoes. It's a fascinating area of debate, and one that we'll be following closely, bringing you the latest research and viewpoints from around the globe.

Equine Welfare:

The Blue Cross, a leading UK animal welfare organisation, is hosting a fundraising campaign this week to highlight the importance of proper care for retired racehorses. This noble initiative aims to support the transition of retired thoroughbreds into safe, comfortable homes, promoting their well-being after their career on the track.

Horse Ownership:

We're also delighted to share some exciting developments from the Horse and Hound Magazine, focusing on responsible horse ownership. This week's edition includes an in-depth guide for first-time owners, offering invaluable advice on selecting the right breed, creating a suitable environment, and understanding the responsibilities of owning a horse.

And lastly, for our keen-eyed breeders:

Breeding Corner:

We're excited to bring you the latest developments from the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses, where a fascinating symposium was held this week. The focus this year was on innovative methods for selecting breeding pairs based on scientific evidence, taking a closer look at the genetics that produce champion athletes. The discussions focused on using the latest advances in DNA testing and genetic analysis to identify traits that will lead to the birth of next-generation equestrian champions.
