Show Jumping
Dutch Riders Dominate in the Netherlands
The first major show jumping competition of the year kicked off this weekend in Holland, with the traditional Masters competition at the Dutch Masters in Den Bosch. As expected, Dutch riders dominated the competition, with the top three spots claimed by Eric Lamaze, Albert Voorn, and John Whitaker.
"I was thrilled to win, especially in such a strong field," said Eric Lamaze after his victory on Hickstead, who was the star of the show, leaping effortlessly over the demanding course. Lamaze was clearly on top form, claiming not only the top spot but also finishing second in the Grand Prix with his second mount, Special Edition.
Top British Hopefuls Gear Up for the Year Ahead
Across the Channel, the UK’s show jumping hopefuls have been busy preparing for the upcoming season, with several international competitions on the calendar.
The British Show Jumping Association is buzzing with excitement for the new year, with the National Championships taking centre stage later in the season. However, eyes are also on the next generation of riders coming through, with the upcoming Winter Championships and a packed schedule of qualifying shows across the country.
Dressage
German Dominance Continues
In the world of dressage, Germany continues its reign as the nation to beat. At the CDI4* in Munich, Isabell Werth showcased her extraordinary talent on her legendary horse, Weihegold, winning the Grand Prix Freestyle.
The German riders were in superb form, dominating the podium with both the top two places and fourth place occupied by German riders.
"I am always striving for excellence," said Werth following her win. "It is always special to be able to showcase the talent of Weihegold to the world."
British Stars Look Ahead to Major Events
The UK dressage scene is also brimming with enthusiasm as riders prepare for a packed year ahead, including the FEI European Championships and the highly competitive London International Horse Show.
We spoke to Carl Hester, a leading figure in British dressage, about his ambitions for 2014: "The goal this year is to continue to refine the partnerships we have with the horses. We aim to build confidence and strength, ensuring that they are ready to excel on the international stage."
Eventing
International Spotlight on Kentucky
Over in America, anticipation is growing for the highly prestigious Kentucky Three-Day Event, due to take place in April. The event will attract top international competitors and offers a fantastic opportunity for athletes to earn qualification points for the upcoming World Championships.
"Kentucky is a pivotal event in the world of eventing," stated British rider William Fox-Pitt. "It's a real test of stamina, courage, and partnership. It is a must-attend for any serious competitor.”

As the winter weather takes hold, equestrian enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the breeding season. 2014 is set to be another strong year for horse breeders, with many looking to produce top-quality sport horses for the future.
"This year's foaling season is expected to be a particularly exciting one," says Equiworld's chief breeder, Tom Sinclair. "The use of innovative breeding techniques and genetic selection programs has seen a notable rise in the quality of foals being produced.”
