History of Horses in the year 0446

Equiworld Blog: Post #446: The Year of the Grey Mare - 0446 AD

Good morrow, dear readers, and welcome to another installment of Emma's Equiworld musings! Today, we travel back to the year 0446, a year brimming with exciting events, as far as the equine world is concerned.

For those of you who are new, my name is Emma. A sturdy, grey mare with a splash of white in my mane and tail, I hail from Hayfield, a picturesque valley nestled near the rugged mountains of Aberdeen, Scotland. My life is rich and full - filled with the daily rhythm of farm life, the wind whipping through my mane on bracing morning rides, and the joyful camaraderie of fellow horses.

And now, let us delve into the happenings of 0446...

A New Dawn for the Horse in the East:

Across the turbulent seas, in the eastern land of Persia, a young, brilliant prince, Yazdegerd II, had ascended the throne. Known for his intelligence and keen love for horses, he had made a most impressive decision: the breeding of powerful steeds for his magnificent army was paramount. With his vision, the Perisan war horses – strong, nimble, and swift – began a golden age, leaving their mark in the annals of equine history.

We in the west heard whispers of these impressive animals. Their fame had reached Hayfield through the merchants who travelled from distant lands, their tales intermingled with descriptions of breathtaking landscapes and the fragrant scents of the Orient. I, being a grey draught horse, am not known for my speed. However, I often longed to hear more about these legendary steeds and dreamed of one day being fast like them.

The Galloping Glory of the Franks:

While the Persian war horses soared through the east, another fascinating development was happening closer to home – in the land of the Franks. The legendary king Clovis, known for his prowess and strategic brilliance, had just ascended to the throne, united the Frankish tribes, and begun solidifying their power. This was a turning point, a momentous occasion in European history, and the horses played a pivotal role.

Clovis’ cavalry – the finest in the region – comprised of skilled riders on strong and courageous mounts. It was their daring, their skill and agility that were essential in turning the tide of battles, paving the way for a new era of Frankish dominion. Their story resonated through our stables, a tale of bravery and horsemanship that filled us with pride.

A Time of Tranquillity for the Scottish Steeds:

Here in our corner of the world, nestled amongst the windswept Scottish Highlands, life was quieter. We worked tirelessly, our strong muscles pulling plows through the fertile earth, bringing sustenance for our people. We carried them across the treacherous terrain, navigating rough paths and stormy weather, aiding them in their quest to conquer the unforgiving wilderness.

As I helped harvest the grain in the field, my powerful hooves stomped on the damp ground, turning over the earth with ease. I thought about the magnificent horses of the East and the valiant steeds of the Franks. It seemed like such a far away world, almost like a dream. Though I yearned to be faster, more nimble, a part of me relished the tranquility of life in Hayfield, amongst my fellow horses. We grazed in lush meadows under a clear sky, the scent of fresh air filling our nostrils, a comforting serenity enveloping us.

The Undying Spirit of the Horses:

Though the year 0446 marked a significant turning point in the history of the horse – from the soaring heights of Persia to the powerful dominion of the Franks - one thing remained unchanged, a timeless constant woven through the tapestry of history: the horse's undying spirit. Whether we served our humans in battle, or worked tirelessly in the fields, our devotion, our loyalty, and our enduring strength were unyielding, as strong as the very earth beneath our hooves.

We are a race that thrives on a deep-seated bond with humans, forging a powerful connection with them that spans centuries. This shared journey is filled with thrilling victories and heartwarming triumphs, a story interwoven with love, loyalty, and endless admiration.

As the sun dips behind the hills of Hayfield, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange and purple, I close my eyes and envision these scenes of bygone years. We horses, in all our shapes, sizes and temperaments, have always played an indispensable role in shaping history. Our spirit, our dedication and our very presence has forever shaped the course of human destiny. And it is that spirit which resonates in each and every one of us, even here in the rolling fields of Scotland.

Until next time, my dear friends, may the road be smooth and your spirits strong!

Yours in the spirit of the horse,

Emma
